Day trip to Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay (March 2016)

We had found a day trip to Uruguay and couldn’t resist the prospect of visiting another country (we were in Buenos Aries, AR). Linda had found the Buquebus that did day trips to Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay. If you bought the tickets online it was cheaper. I didn’t get a photo of the boat, but you can see it on the landing page of the link above.

The entrance to the UNESCO heritage site has a draw bridge that is still said to work – we did not see it work.

Tammie and Linda did try though.

An overview of this part of the town from the lighthouse, shows the Basílica del Santísimo Sacramento. That parish was established in 1680 and is one of the oldest in the country.img_5556-xl

We found this place to have lunch as it overlooked the ocean and had a great feel.

This cute red building was there because of the contributions of the Armenian Philanthropist Caloust Gulbenkian foundation.

Well worth the day trip from Buenos Aires! We had originally booked the late boat back so that we would have enough time to explore. After the few hours in Colonia we thought it would be good to go back on an early boat so that we could have dinner and a good night sleep before our very early departure to Ushuaia. They wanted a lot of money to change our tickets and we decided to explore more!

Found a couple of old cars then El Drug Store – a funky restaurant.

We ended up heading back to the hotel just after 9pm and woke up the next day to start our adventure to Ushuaia and Antarctica…
